Skin cancer surgery options after a diagnosis

There are various types of skin cancer that can develop, which is why we encourage patients to schedule regular skin cancer screenings. These visits allow our double-board-certified dermatologist to monitor changes in the skin which may be indicative of cancer. When cancer is found, patients need to talk to their doctor about skin cancer surgery options. At Ginsburg Dermatology Center in Birmingham, Alabama, we encourage our patients to schedule skin cancer screenings at least once a year and visit us if any unusual changes occur.

What types of skin cancer may be diagnosed?

  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Melanoma

Melanoma is the most serious and needs treatment as soon as possible to avoid rapid spreading to other areas of the body after diagnosis. Skin cancer surgery may be recommended.

What melanoma treatment options are available?

If you have been diagnosed with melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer, you must talk to a professional about your treatment options. For most of our patients, skin cancer surgery, or excision, is recommended to remove the cancerous skin cells in the area. However, if you have skin cancer present in a highly visible area and want to reduce the risk of any disfigurement, you might want to ask about a specific type of skin cancer surgery known as Mohs micrographic surgery.

This surgical treatment removes the skin cancer but does so layer by layer to reduce the removal of healthy surrounding tissue and the appearance of scarring. Mohs micrographic surgery requires a trained professional such as Dr. Tony Adar, our double-board-certified dermatologist, to perform to ensure the best possible results.
