Acne is one of the world’s most common conditions, and it can be particularly traumatic as it is so hard to miss. At Ginsburg Dermatology Center and Medical Spa, you have professional, compassionate support on your side as well as one of the most effective (yet underutilized) treatments: Accutane.
Accutane is the brand name for an oral medication used at our Birmingham, Alabama, office since the 1980s. Isotretinoin is a derivative of Vitamin A. While first approved for the most severe acne (cystic), it has, through the decades, proven itself to be successful at clearing all types of acne – to the point that some of our patients have finally put acne behind them for good! And not only is Accutane the most effective treatment of its kind, but it is also the safest option on the market today.
No medication or therapy is universally appropriate. For instance, we wouldn’t prescribe Accutane to pregnant women because it is associated with a risk of severe birth defects. As with all treatments at our center, clearer skin begins with a consultation. We will evaluate your skin and consider other factors, such as your general health, before prescribing Accutane or other medications and interventions.
Most commonly, our patients will tell us that their lips and skin feel drier. Otherwise, effects like depression and lipid alterations are very rare. We closely monitor for mood changes and changes to your blood (among those patients who are overweight or have a family history of cardiovascular disease). With responsible use, isotretinoin serves as the “gold standard” for clearing acne. We have rarely seen allergic reactions or treatment failures among those who have adhered to our recommendations. Likewise, Accutane blends a high success rate with minimal risk of considerable side effects.
There is no other experience with Accutane quite like yours. You may notice immediate improvements. Or, you may be among those patients whose skin has to get worse before it gets better. Ultimately, all patients whose acne has been managed in conjunction with Ginsburg Dermatology and Medical Center achieved complete clearance. Once achieved, many patients keep their skin clear for months to years. Flare-ups are rare, and, as noted, side effects are typically minor and infrequent.
If you have severe acne or are disappointed by a lack of results from antibiotics and topical therapies, let’s talk! Our team in Birmingham believes no one should suffer needlessly when a proven and safe option is right here in north-central AL. Call (205) 209-4780 to speak with us today, and we will see you soon.
