With Smart Laser Liposuction, it is possible to safely remove localized collections of fat that will not go away by diet or exercise . . .and you can go back to work the next day. The distribution of fat in adults is somewhat genetically determined. Women, particularly after pregnancy, tend to accumulate fat in the hips and abdomen. Adult men get deposits in the waist also known as "love handles". Liposuction is often the only means of removing these genetically determined fat deposits.

At Ginsburg Dermatology, we exclusively use the Smart Laser Liposuction Technique as developed by Dr. Jeffrey Klein, the inventor of a specialized technique for liposuction by local anesthesia. Dr. Ginsburg trained with Dr. Klein, and we have found this technique is the safest, and most precise method of liposuction available today.

The change in silhouette produced by liposuction is equivalent to focusing the effects of dieting on a specific area, like the hips or abdomen. The skin remains connected to the underlying tissues, so it will not hang loose after liposuction. The most commonly treated areas in women are the abdomen, hips, thighs, knees and beneath the chin. Men commonly request treatment of love handles, abdomen, breasts, neck and chin.

We strive for "significant" improvement and the results can be spectacular! However anyone considering liposuction should understand that perfection is an unrealistic expectation. Puckering or "cellulite" may be helped by liposuction, but will not be eliminated.

Fat cells removed should not re-accumulate in these areas. If weight is gained, the new fat will be deposited in other areas more than the areas treated by liposuction. The ideal candidate for liposuction is someone who is healthy and has a realistic expectation of their desired outcome. It is good if you are near your ideal weight, but you can achieve great results even if you are overweight. An overweight person whose weight is stable, and has a few problem areas, would be an excellent candidate.

How does Laser Smart Laser Liposuction work? This laser-assisted lipolysis procedure is performed using a one millimeter connula (or tube) inserted into the skin. A laser fiber inside of the connula delivers energy directly to fat cells, causing them to rupture and drain away as liquid. Simultaneously, tissue around the area coagulates, resulting in overall tighter skin tissue.

This "Laser" Technique uses large volumes of very dilute anesthetic. The anesthetic is warmed prior to installation, so this part of the procedure is not painful. Because of the ability of the solution to constrict blood vessels, there is very little blood loss, and the area remains numb for 12 to 24 hours. There is no need for post-operative pain relievers, and you can even drive yourself home and work the next day. A mild sedative can be used if you desire, and you can have a friend or relative drive you home.

Because there is no need for general anesthesia, Smart Laser Liposuction is very safe. It is well known that local anesthesia is safer than general anesthesia. The risk of serious complications is exceedingly small, and there are only occasional minor side effects such as bruising, swelling, and temporary numbness. There can be irregularities in the skin, but by using small cannulas, this risk is very small. It can take three to four months for the swelling to be resolved completely, but you will see dramatic results immediately. Because of the small size of the cannulas, there is minimal trauma, and some patients do not experience any bruising.
